The bells of….Australia?

So on our last day in Western Australia- we started with a trip the Fremantle market – an extremely cool covered market that had all kinds of local foods and crafts..For breakfast we enjoyed a fantastic sausage roll, a Greek spanakopita and Bee and Jay housed a few awesome cupcakes.   One of the highlights was another honey tasting with a woman who had over 3 decades of beekeeping and honey experience – she was very impressed with Jay and Bee’s taste buds.

After that we toured a few attractions in Perth- 1st an awesome shipwreck museums..100’s of ships have wrecked off the Western Australia coast (not so surprising after seeing the crazy surf this week) – and this museum has the remains (treasures, cannons even whole planks) of many including a few almost entirely assembled.. Of particular note was the Dutch East India Ship (VOC) Batavia, which has a crazy story of surviving on a desert island and mutiny of a crew.

Next stop was the oldest building in Western Australia, the Fremantle Round House – a prison that was built back in 1831.  Dad even got put into the shackles….

But the definite highlight of the day was Be’s pick- the Bell Tower of Perth.  Built as part of Australia’s centennial celebration in 2001- it houses a complete set of bells borrowed from a church in England.   These bells are played by skilled ringers every week, but they let us give it a whirl..tugging up and down on giant ropes rocks the bells back and forth – and each person operates one bell to play a different pitch (16 in all- the largest weighing almost 2.5 T)..Interestingly, the real bells ringers start with the bells upside down- so one big pull makes it ring just one time.  The tower also housed bells from different religions and the oldest bell in Australia- that has a crack in it reminiscent of our favorite bell back in Philadelphia.

After a nice walk along the Perth waterfront (and a really cool pedestrian bridge) we said our goodbyes to an awesome week down under in Western Australia- even flying off into a beautiful sunset!

Cool Adventure! (Figuratively and literally!) You’re getting really good at singling out the details that put us right there with you. Honey tasting and bell ringing…a sweet sounding set of experiences! We hope there are pictures of your dad in shackles!
